Student Safety

Whether the threats are viruses, trauma, racism, sexism, homophobia, ableism, or violence—my number one goal is to keep our students safe.

Accomplishments

  • Despite objections from the governor, I joined my board colleagues in voting for a mask mandate that resulted in some of the lowest school district COVID infection rates in the state

  • Called for a special board meeting that led to a virtual learning option for the Fall 2021

  • Championed a revision of our sex education curriculum to include consent, reporting of sexual crimes, and inclusivity for our LGBTQIA+ students

  • Strengthened the student code of conduct by prohibiting student-to-student sexual harassment

  • Led the board’s advocacy to develop key performance indicators for the Austin ISD police department that would reduce violence against Black and Hispanic students

Looking Ahead

  1. Continue investments in community schools and wraparound services that provide safety nets for our families’ health and financial needs

  2. Support cultural proficiency, inclusion, and social-emotional training for our staff

  3. Support bond measures to improve our facilities

  4. Ensure police department reduces use of force and arrests

  5. Add gun safety to AISD's list of legislative priorities
